Thanos with all stones: gets hit with stormbreaker

Thanos without all the stones : can't get hit with storm breaker once

I don't buy the whole, "they served no purpose beyond temptation" bit. Thanos destroyed the stones because he knew that it was only a matter of time before someone showed up to take them from him and undo the decimation. He may not have expected it to be the Avengers. (Or maybe he did. Who knows?) But, either way, he knew that eventually someone would come calling, and, if they got the drop on him, even having a completed Infinity Gauntlet may not prevent them from taking him down. Let's not forget that in the big final battle Captain Marvel physically overpowered him while he was wearing a completed gauntlet. (The look on his face when he head butted her and she barely even noticed was hilarious!) He was forced to pull the Power Stone out of the gauntlet in order to make himself strong enough to beat her, so having the completed Infinity Gauntlet didn't make him invincible.

Also, the fact that the gauntlet got cooked when Thanos used it to decimate half of all living creatures in the universe was irrelevant. The gauntlet was simply a device used to connect all six stones so that they could be wielded together as one. The metal getting melted a bit doesn't matter, and neither does the fact that it's a glove. It could just as easily have been the Infinity Stick or the Infinity Bracelet or the Infinity Necklace. Anything that joined the stones together so that they could be used all as one would've worked.

It's also worth noting that one wouldn't have had to actually put the gauntlet on in order to use it. Simply holding onto it would be enough, and snapping one's fingers was not a requirement either. It was simply just a tool used to show the audience that the stones were being used. It's also why Carol and then Tony were able to stop Thanos from using the stones and why he had to actually pull the Power Stone out of the gauntlet in order to use it against Carol rather than simply using the power of the stones to turn her to dust. It's not that they stopped him from snapping his fingers. That didn't matter. (Thanos or Bruce or Tony could've accomplished the exact same thing with a simple thought, but that's kind of hard to show on film.) It's that when she put her hands on the gauntlet the stones were suddenly serving two masters, and neither could use their power against the other, but when Thanos pulled the Power Stone out of the gauntlet Carol was no longer in contact with it and therefor no longer had any control over it. Hence Thanos was then able to use its power to flatten her. It's the same reason he couldn't use the stones' power against Tony when he attacked, and Tony, being the smartest man on Earth, used that attack to just plain outsmart the prune chinned titan. While distracting Thanos by pretending to try to take the gauntlet from him with one hand — which Tony knew full well that he was nowhere near strong enough to do — he was in fact stealing the stones out of the gauntlet with the other. Classic Tony Stark, you don't have to be the strongest when you're the smartest!

On a side note, I desperately wanted to hear Steve or (more likely) Thor ask Thanos if he "enjoyed it very, very much" in those last few moments before he and every one of his allies turned to dust!!!

  • The movie sucks. Marvel with a policy of tolerance sank to the bottom. Thor turned into a loser. The plot itself is not worked out, the characters seem to have degraded to the level of a monkey. What's been happening to American cinema since the beginning of star wars has turned to suck, now this. And it's all connected, basically, to things like racism on the part of African Americans and female feminism.
